Home Mobility Aid for Older Adults
Overview
Transferring including Sit-to-Stand, Stand-to-Sit and Walking is one of the most important parts of older people's lives as a daily activity that requires a high level of coordination and frequent undertaking. The main focus of this project is therefore to reduce the risk of them losing their balance during this process and to get outside help when needed.
How It Works
There may be many places in the home environment including toilets, beds, chairs, etc. They can all be the starting or ending point for transfer, but this activity can still be broken down into three fixed actions, standing up, walking and sitting down. The goal of this device that is driven by linear actuator is to assist the user as they perform these three actions.
1:1 Cardboard Model
I realized that a prototype that could essentially reproduce both the dimensions and the mechanics of the real product was needed. Given the project's time and cost, cardboard might be the right material to use for such a model. Some parts with higher strength requirements or special shapes were to be made by 3D printing. Considering the large size of the model, I aimed to make it could be broken down into smaller parts so that it could be more easily moved to other locations for testing. This concept was implemented into the final model. The complete model consists of seven parts which can be held and moved anywhere within walking distance.
Small-sized Functional Model
At this stage I wanted to develop this promising mechanism further by adding more details that were close to the real thing, including more detailed controls and rotation, more robust materials, etc. The result was a prototype controlled by an Arduino board and powered by two servos.
Styling Sketch
This part of the project was about the organization and use of visual elements. I first explored the possibilities under the side view, then four potential options were selected and developed into perspective views. Then one of the options was considered to be the one with the most potential to reflect the desired look and feel. I used this as a basis to refine more details in addition to the main parts, so that it gradually became complete.
Other Project: AR headset for exploring Earth-like planets
This is an output of the Industrial Design and Technology Skills module. The concept was born out of an attempt to discover the future applications of wearable devices. The headset uses AR technology to present information to enable a limited number of advance team members to move, communicate and build infrastructure on an Earth-like planet more efficiently.
Other Project: AR headset for exploring Earth-like planets
I saw it as a thought practice that is to envision a future environment based on technology that already exists and what has already happened. The image above is another appearance schemes that were produced in this project.
Other Project: SWA Drinking Device
This is a drinking water device designed for the user with motor neurone disease. It can be strapped to the handle of a wheelchair. When a customized water bag is rolled into this device, water can be squeezed into the user's mouth, passing through a hose.
