I’ve been wanting to be a designer that can make people’s life more convenient, healthier and happier, and I always believe that design plays an important role in making people’s life better. And to make this happen when designing, I will use the Double Diamond design model and make sure each stage is evidence-based to make the design practical and feasible. After having a design brief, I will apply design research methods and other effective methods to generate lots of ideas related to the brief, and then use PDS (Product design specification) to evaluate them and select one or two for further development, sketches, CAD or prototyping could be used to develop the design. Finally, there will be the most feasible and workable solution.
Major project
A Tea Making Set for Stress Relief.
Major Project Design Brief
This image explains the design brief and UTE (user, task, environment) of this project. The challenge for this design is to properly leverage the effect of Traditional Oriental tea ceremony to help people relax and relieve their stress.
A View of Design Development of Major Project
This image shows the development of the design mainly through 2d sketches, it shows the thinking process of the designer and some early abandoned ideas. It is hard to visually explore and express ideas of the whole tea making process properly in a limited time, as there are many elements involved in this design. Therefore, many rough sketches were drawn first to help quickly form different process of the user journey, and then some fine sketches were drawn to develop the elements in it.
Prototyping and Design Evaluation
Image three shows the prototypes made and design evaluation were done during this process, models were made for technical testing and ergonomic testing, and the inner parts were developed to enhance its feasibility.
Final Proposal and the Realization of the Design
Image four shows the final realization of the design for major project. It includes hero shots and some pictures of the product details. The pictures at the bottom also show the order of use in the user journey. Materials and colors were chosen to make the tea set look elegant and high-quality.
BOKET—A Water-drinking Bottle Designed for People with MND
This project is a group design project (three people) in the Module of Business Enterprise Design. BOKET is a water-drinking device designed for people with MND (Motor Neurone Disease). Sufficient research was done to learn about our target users before designing anything. BOKET can help users drink water independently only with movements of their head and neck, and they can use their chins to open the lid and drink the water with the straw inside. It is light and portable and can even be a fashion item. And in this project, a business model canvas and a three-year plan for selling and promoting our product was made to develop our own business, the challenge was to make ends meet and then make money in the long run.
Gipsy Avenger—A facial mask for hunters in the future
This project is a futuristic design, the background setting is that in the future, global warming has made food production impossible, and human is going through the transformation to hunter gathers temporally to survive, while we are equipped with technology…And this mask can help future hunters obtain distant vision, see things at night, and communicate between hunting team members without being heard by the fierce animal monsters. It acquires high techs, and it has a cool futuristic look.
Disposable Coffee Cup Recycling System
This project was done for the Module of Design for Behavior Change, it applied many DfBC methods to make people’s behavior of throwing coffee cups more sustainable. For my design, applied “feedback” and “behavior steering” to try to make people recycle their disposable coffee cups correctly and form it a habit, which helps increase the recycling rate and reduce waste. The whole design includes a cup sleeve, a cup recycling bin with a cup sleeve collection box and some mobile interfaces. The cup sleeve was designed to give the customer a hint to their thoughts that they are sustainable, the bin will restrict their throwing behaviors and the collection box will help give them a sense of achievement.
Cactus—A caring kit for children with type1 diabetes
Cactus includes an insulin injection device and a portable bag pack for the syringe and insulin packs. The usage of the syringe is very simple and child-friendly, and the bag pack offers a way of “insulin-to-go”, it can help store the syringe and two packs of insulin with the child as he or she may need it. The appearance show a sense of cuteness and friendliness, which may reduce the fear of children when using it, and making type1 diabetes not that scaring anymore.
